Erica Bonner cast an eye over the school hall. All around her was the chatter of people, some settling in to their seats, others mulling around in small groups in the aisles.

On stage, behind thick curtains she could here the nervous blow of a trumpet, a violinist attempting a last minute tune and what she thought was stage hands making last minute adjustments to the choir benches.

She glanced at her watch, telling her it wanted ten before seven. She smiled politely as a large man whaled past her to get to his seat.

"Bloody oaf of a man!" her husband Hugh muttered next to her. "Why do we have to come to these shindigs in the first place?"

Erica shot him an evil look. If this was some rugby match, he would not have thought twice to drag her all the way to Ellis Park, where he'll chug beer after beer and yell obscenities at the cheerleaders.

She said nothing. Better to let sleeping dogs lie.

The school hall had not changed much. It was still the same red bricked building, grey stick-on tiles on the floor and horrible black plastic chairs to sit on. From her vantage point on the balcony, she could see the whole floor. People were now mauling about in an attempt to find their seats. ...
