My wife Andrea had an affair while we were living in Rome 3 years ago.

I had suspected as much for quite some time but until she confessed to me in our kitchen, I was never 100% sure. I thought I would be angrier than I was. I felt a little betrayed for sure and quite jealous- but my reaction was something less than anger.

Rome had been difficult for us, Andrea especially. She had been an elementary school teacher here in the US but when my company offered me the chance to manage the Rome office, well it wasn't something I could turn down. We had both agreed on that.

The first couple months were the honeymoon period. A new city, we were living abroad for the first time, everything was new and exciting. We had a gorgeous apartment in Centro Storico, one of the most beautiful and sought after neighborhoods in the city. The food, the music, the culture- it was all wonderful.

But the reality set in. Andrea had trouble building a life of her own there. There was the language barrier. And she couldn't work. To get a work visa she needed to first have a job, but to get a job she needed to speak the language. We assumed that at the very least she would be able to find something teaching English but there were so many ex-pats in Rome that it was near impossible to find a job doing that, even with her teaching background. ...
