1. Thursday

The plan had been for the women to spend Thursday night at the hotel, making full use of the spa, before their respective boyfriends and husbands came up Friday night to celebrate Victoria's 30th birthday in earnest. The whole group would hike to a nearby winery for dinner and drinks, and would pass Saturday by the pool.

The first problem was the rain. Rather than a weekend outdoors, it was looking like the entire vacation would be spent cooped up in the hotel. The second problem was that Anna's husband, Denny, had to work late on Friday and wouldn't show up until late Saturday morning. And the guest of honor was explaining the third problem.

"Don't even say his name," Victoria warned her friends, flopping into an overstuffed chair in the hotel lobby and motioning for Anna to pour her a glass from the bottle of wine on the low table before her. Vic explained that a series of texts left open on her ex-boyfriend's phone, which until recently had been her boyfriend's phone, had revealed that he had been having an affair.

"That ass," hissed Anna.

"We never liked him anyway," spat Jessie.
