Chapter 9: A Christmas Gift

Tallia left the house wishing she had worn a pair of long underwear. It had snowed the day before and the ground was covered in a few inches of silvery snow. As she walked to the garage, she looked at her backyard. The flat landscape of tan grass and barren trees now sparkled with undulating waves of snow. The hydrangea bushes along the west side of the house and east side of the garage were like skeletal necks reach up through the snow with brown moppy heads topped with a wig of snow.

Her driveway and sidewalks were bare of snow thanks to Marty who came through at the crack of dawn with his snow blower. Afterwards she invited him in for some coffee and warm cinnamon buns she baked while he pushed the noisy contraption around and woke up the rest of the neighborhood.

Good ol' Cherry started without any hesitation. Tallia gave the loyal pickup a pat on the dash as if it were a good dog before backing out of the garage. Before she reached the street, she pressed the remote door closer and watched as the garage door slowly descended.

She slowly drove through the town's streets, the day quiet enough for her to hear the snow crunch noisily beneath her tires. The streets were neatly plowed and main thoroughfares salted.
