Chapter 5: Collar

Ian was away for three days at a trade-show. No prizes for guessing that Elaine wasn't going to get to sit around at home.

"I'm picking you up at 9am tomorrow," I told her. "We'll go to my cabin upstate."

I had a house a few hours out of the city. But I followed everyone else's lead and called it a cabin. I inherited it from an uncle who never married. It was in the middle of nowhere, accessed down a forestry department fire road. There was nothing for miles around. Luckily when they put a cell-phone tower in on top of a nearby hill they also brought in electricity, so my off-the-grid cabin was suddenly very much on-the-grid. Not just electricity, but great cellular reception and the internet. It did mean I could work there, but I'm not sure that was a big improvement. I used to like the solitude.

"What should I bring?" Elaine said.

"Mostly just yourself. The cabin is isolated. It is warm. We don't need to wear clothes. Bring a pair of sandals. Something to wear if we go to the diner in the nearest town. That's pretty much it."
