Chapter 3: Saint John

December 2013

Dixie Daniels stood out on the deck facing the ocean and closed her eyes. A gentle breeze slipped over her exposed skin like a ghostly caress. She could hear the surf foaming on the shore even from her vantage point on the hill above the bay. Dozens of bananaquits chirped happily in a nearby tree. She opened her eyes, the sun reflecting on the turquoise water nearly blinding her with its brilliance.

About a dozen of the bananaquits landed on the shallow glass dishes the owner of the cottage put out with sugar water in them. The small, yellow-bellied birds flitted about, seemingly arguing with one another before settling on the bowl's edge to sip the sweet water. They closely resembled the plain sparrows so prevalent back home in Wisconsin but instead of gray breasts the bananaquits' were bright yellow.

The deck of the tiny rental cottage had a bistro table and chairs along with two chaise lounges. She was sitting on a chair with a cup of coffee and nibbling on a lemon scone from an island bakery as she looked out over the bay. She watched as fishermen set off in their boats to hunt for marlin and tuna.
