Karen Mason's life had become embroiled in turmoil. Working conditions at GHI Industries had been chaotic for months now, with rumors of takeover and management change floating around. These circumstances motivated Karen to send out her resume, an action which opened a series of interviews with another company. She finally accepted a challenging position with a company in another state. The package they offered included paying for the move, a signing bonus, and a substantial increase in base pay with incentives above that.

So Karen focused on the task of getting her family ready to move. Her husband, Andrew, would keep the kids with him short term while putting the house up for sale. After a brief interlude, he would give notice at his work. Karen's new income was substantially higher than his, so his finding work after the relocation shouldn't create a sense of urgency.

The most difficult part of the transition for Karen was leaving her friends at work. The company atmosphere and opportunity there had become untenable, but her coworkers have always united and faced adversity together. They accomplished a lot in concert during her eight years there.
