The cabin perched right on the 7000 foot elevation contour line, in a dense Ponderosa Pine forest dotted with granite boulders and surrounded by the nearly ten thousand foot peaks that defined the area. The lake had been excavated by a glacier long before I was born. The terminal moraine to our west functioned to dam up the stream that tumbled down from the mountains in a spectacular valley to the east. Two story windows on the lake side of the cabin presented our view of the lake and mountains.

Nearly half a mile away a few cabins dotted the opposite shore. We had neighbors on either side of us, but their cabins were completely hidden by the forest. The summer visitors had mostly locked up their cabins for the season, so we kinda had the place to ourselves.

The two girls and I had graduated from North Central High and were headed to college at the end of the week. I was going south to the state university. Nancy and Karen were headed across the country to some place in Massachusetts that just went by three letters. We were half of the geeks physics club. And we had my parents' cabin for a week.
