Sacrifices - Chapter 3: The Holidays

Olivia Chadwick Vega stepped out onto the balcony outside the guest room of her parents' winter estate in Palm Beach and inhaled the crisp salty air. She swore she felt a faint mist from the Atlantic on her skin. She looked out at the horizon where yachts, the size of little children's toys, bobbed on the water. To the south a sailboat raced across the surface of the dark blue water. She yearned to be on it, sailing somewhere far away, away from her life, somewhere peaceful and exotic.

She reclined on the balcony's chaise lounge and set her glass of pineapple juice on the glass table next to it regretting that there wasn't a heavy dose of vodka or gin in it. She had breakfast sent up to the room rather than go downstairs to join the family and just finished eating a slice of toast and a poached egg. Her husband Franco left the room earlier to take a dip in the pool. She was tempted to join him but his brooding mood made her think better of it. She knew he was in a bad mood because he missed his whore back home in New York. The thought of his mystery woman made her sick to her stomach.

She was gifted at discerning when other people within her social circle were having affairs, including her brother's trophy wife, but when it came to Franco she had a blind spot. She usually didn't learn about his affairs until they were over. Once she even knew an acquaintance of hers was having a mad, passionate affair with a man who was not her ...
