Chapter 2: Rio de Janeiro November 2012

Roberto Neves sat out on the terrace listening to the bustling traffic down below and gazing out at the mountains across the lagoon. His penthouse was in an older building in the affluent Lagoa neighborhood of Rio de Janiero overlooking the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon and Corcovado Mountain to the north. The infamous statue of Christ, Cristo Redentor, was shrouded in mist atop its perch on Corcovado Mountain. The morning was comfortable, in the mid-seventies, the sky slate gray.

Roberto sipped on some espresso, a pack of cigarettes and that day's newspaper folded on the table next to him. A gentle breeze carried the Atlantic's salty air inland, fluttering the edges of the newspaper. The smell of the ocean reminded him of Philomena Scott and the sensual hours they spent on his yacht. He closed his eyes and could almost smell her clean, fresh perfume like freshly laundered cotton left out on the line to dry.

He hadn't seen her in over a year when they lost touch before his criminal trial was scheduled to begin. While he was out on bail, he tried calling her repeatedly, leaving messages, but he never heard from her.
