Chapter 6: So Close

FBI Profiler Sydney Babcock touched the bagged laptop computer of the latest Slasher victim and got a psychic impression. She could feel the victim's enthusiasm over meeting a new guy. The vision was a positive one, the victim Gretchen Powers never foreseeing her own murder.

Sydney's "gift" was inherited, passed down from her mother and maternal grandmother and undoubtedly their family before them. While her grandma used her skills to her advantage, often helping friends find lost objects, Sydney's mother was afraid of her gift and dampened her psychic abilities with alcohol. It proved to be her downfall when she failed to foresee her husband killing her.

Sydney knew at a young age she wanted to put her abilities to good use. After her mother's murder, she decided on a career in law enforcement. The only problem was she couldn't admit to having psychic abilities; she had to find more practical, logical ways of explaining her visions and intuition. She decided to study psychology in college, earning a Master's degree, and using it to explain her insight into cases once she joined the FBI.

She put the laptop down on the conference room table as if it burned her fingers. She picked up a marker and started adding information to the murder board for the Slasher task force. The investigation was headed ...
