SERVING HER COUNTRY

Since graduating from high school, Kurt's life had changed drastically. He had joined the Marine Corps and for the first time, he was living away from his family and the town where he had grown up. He had gone to Basic Training at Parris Island and then had ten days' leave. He went home to see his parents and friends before going to Camp Lejeune for combat training. After completing infantry school, he was sent to 29 Palms, California, where he was trained as a radio operator before being sent back to Camp Lejeune to join his unit.

Sure, he had made friends in the Corps, but he was still lonely. When he arrived back at Lejeune, he met another young Marine who was also a radio operator and reported there for his first duty assignment a couple of months earlier. Kurt and Jon were both nineteen and shared many of the same interests. They hit it off immediately and were soon best friends. Jon's life growing up had been a little different from Kurt's. His family had relocated to new towns several times because of his father's job. As a result, he was used to meeting new people and settling in at different locations.
