My name is Catherine Rybolt. Everyone calls me Cathy. I'm the director of a Senior Center in a small city in the Midwest. When I was hired my resume was posted on the Center's website and bulletin board. I was initially trained as an RN, earned an MSW, and had been a practicing psychologist for a dozen years, specializing in couples counseling. The seniors came to trust me, and in some cases I was the only person they felt comfortable talking to about their problems.

I think I was hired because no one else applied for the job, and I was looking for something a little less stressful. What put me over the edge was when the wife of a fairly prominent member of our community threw a punch at her husband during a session. That's when I decided to look in a different direction.

The old folks at the Senior Citizens Center were very pleasant. They came in, played cards and board games, did puzzles. Lots of seniors came in more for the social interaction than anything else. I also organized guest lecturers on just about any subject you could think of, often at the suggestion of our patrons. I had numerous requests for lecturers on senior sex, STDs, etc. Once a week we had movie day, with free popcorn. They loved it. We served lunch every day. It was inexpensive, and in fact free to those who qualified.
