I am an amateur astronomer and also a professional one. Sounds a bit geeky and not at all exciting doesn't it. Well at least not exciting in any sexual way. All that was about to change. Before I get onto that I have to cover the geeky bit so everything makes sense. My astronomical telescope has what is called a "finder scope" attached to the side of it. This is a small scope attached to the side of the main one which makes it easier to point the main scope at a particular location in the sky. The finder scope has to be aligned to the main scope or "calibrated" fairly often. In order to do this, I need a fixed object about 800 to 1000 m away to align the two scopes so they see the same thing. About 955 m away (I measured on google maps. Yes, I'm that geeky.) is a building which I assume contains a number of small flats or apartments. On the wall facing my apartment is one window that is unobscured by trees. This is the object I use for my alignment. I have been doing this for several years with nothing out of the ordinary happening. I think I saw a man walk past the window once but that is all that ever happened. Over the last few weeks there had been some changes though. The room looked brighter as if it had been redecorated and had a brighter light fitted. I assumed the apartment had been sold to someone who liked less gloom. I was pleased with this because the light meant I could carry out the process at night as well as in the day. Last Saturday in the early evening I set up my scope in the living room and opened the doors to the balcony.
