Chapter 4: A Weekend Off

Detective Charlotte "Charlie" Parker was looking forward to a day of rest and relaxation. The few days she spent on The Fisherman Task Force were making her weary. The case was an awful cocktail of frustration and intense pressure from all directions.

The Fisherman's victims were prostitutes, a horribly vulnerable group that did little to protect themselves. Their work required them to get into strangers' cars, putting them at the mercy of their johns. A few carried knives and pepper spray but once you were in close quarters with a killer, there was little time to think let alone pull out something to defend yourself without the risk of being overpowered. To make matters worse, they weren't receptive to police help. They walked a fine line of worrying about becoming victims and getting arrested for turning tricks. They tried hard to avoid the police. Many thought they deserved the life they led, their psyches broken to the point where death wasn't such an awful alternative.

To make matters worse, the neighborhood where the victims lived, worked and their bodies dumped was close-lipped. Neighbors liked to keep to themselves. They were a transient population not big on helping the police. The weak and vulnerable were afraid of reprisals. The petty ...
