Chapter 9: Catch the Cannonball

Tuesday, July 3, 1928

Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Mitch Monroe drove his Ford Model A from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin to nearby Paddock's Lake. Fellow agent Bill Goldman sat in the passenger seat smoking a cigarette. They had their jackets off and their sleeves rolled up, the windows open hoping to dispel some of the oppressive heat. The plan was to stop at Barney's, a small diner, on Paddock's Lake to check if anyone saw murder victim Graziella Romano there the day before she was killed. She was supposed to have met someone after arriving at her family's summer home on May 31st in Lake Geneva but his agents had yet to discover where she met the mystery person even after canvassing most area businesses and talking to residents within a ten mile radius of Lake Geneva. Now with a tip from Paulina Stark, who also discovered Graziella's body on her property, he learned about a small diner on Paddock's Lake about fifteen miles from Lake Geneva where Graziella might have met her killer.

He stopped at a gas station to fill up with gas and get directions to Barney's. He had to drive back the way he came on Highway 50 and turn on a small side street leading down to the lake. Barney's was at the end of the road right on the water.
