The blizzard had all of the trains running late. It was evening, about 7:30, and 30th street station was mostly empty on a lonely Monday. I had gotten a black coffee from a kiosk, and sat at a bench with a view of the station. Vaulted ceilings rose four stories high, with narrow windows running up the tan marble walls. Long phallic chandeliers hung from the ceiling, to make up for the sunlight that streamed through during the day.

There were rows of benches in orderly lines, arranged thoughtfully near staircases leading down to subterranean boarding platforms. My chosen bench was close to the end, allowing me a full view of the other waiting passengers.

They were mostly people traveling to see family, as evidenced by their luggage. A few late workers with briefcases, some university students going home for the weekend. I passed time by inventing backstories for the more interesting looking ones.

An older woman, dressed in a fur coat, with platinum blonde hair and an excess of make-up? She was a once wealthy widow, fallen on hard times, traveling to stay with distant relatives after losing her mansion.

Two young ladies, wearing university emblazoned sweatshirts and tight black leggings? Obviously expelled for sleeping with one of their professors in a scandalous threesome. ...
