The city of Imus Cavite is a densely populated city about an hour south of Manila due to the congestion caused by overpopulation. The people of Imus, like in most parts of the Philippines, are poor but happy people. In most parts of Imus, houses were built closely together in Barangays, with neighbors seeing, hearing, and smelling everything going on in each other's houses. While this environment was bad for privacy, it made for a tight nit community where neighbors felt more like extended family. They ate together, sang together, and even fought like family.

Elmer was a 19-year-old student at the auto mechanic school in Imus. Like most kids born in Imus, he came from a big family. His mother made money by doing clothing alterations from their home, while his father worked at a factory. Money was hard to come by growing up, but things improved when Elmer's older brother Fernando started work in Dubai as a domestic helper.
