A few years ago, a new family moved in next door. You wouldn't notice them. They didn't stand out in any way. I guess that's the way it works.

Mike is a nice guy. He keeps his yard looking nice. They wave hello in the driveway. A few times, they've invited us to a backyard cookout. If you need your driveway cleared in the winter, or someone to keep an eye on your house while you're out of town, he's your guy. Completely unremarkable. Medium build, medium height, medium hair, medium everything.

His wife, Ally, is exactly the same. You wouldn't notice her in the grocery store aisle, unless you're really into middle aged, stay-at-home, mothers of four. From time-to-time, we'd catch a glimpse of her as they were leaving for a nice occasion, and my wife would comment that Ally looked really pretty. She was that kind of nearly middle-aged woman; when she dressed up, she could be very pretty, but most of the time, you'd see her with her hair going all over, in sweats and a baggy shirt, harried and overwhelmed like every other parent in the neighborhood.

It wasn't that we weren't friendly. We were perfectly cordial neighbors. We just weren't particularly close, in the way some neighbors are. It was all perfectly fine.
