My Steamy Amigos

I’d never been in a foreign steam room before. Actually I’d not been in many in the U.S. There was one at the gym that I belonged to, but after working out I was usually in too much of a hurry to sit there for another 20 minutes. So here I was in Mexico City about to enter a steam room.

This was the beginning of a summer of bumming around through the country. I crossed the border at Laredo, Texas and had taken the morning train that would overnight down to the capital. I was going to spend a few days at this cheap, I mean inexpensive, hotel before heading out to some of the great places that I’d heard of that were a few hours north of here.

I’d seen the sign in the building next to the hotel, GIMNASIO, ALBERCA Y SALA DE VAPOR. I wasn’t interested in the gym or the pool, but the steam room sounded like a good idea. The train ride was long and I felt that I needed more than a shower, so I went in. I couldn’t believe how cheap it was for a locker, 2 towels and use of the steam.
