Chapter 1: Reunited with Janis

Katrina's heart pounded in her chest as she approached her family's home. The familiar sight of the white picket fence and the flower garden her mother tended to with loving care should have brought her comfort, but instead, a wave of anxiety washed over her. She hesitated at the gate, taking a deep breath before pushing it open. She had been away for what felt like an eternity. The rituals she had undergone at the chapel lingered in her mind, like a dark cloud hanging over her every thought.

As she walked up the path, the front door swung open, and there stood Janis, his face lighting up with pure, untainted joy. His nerdy glasses sat slightly angled on his nose, and his hair was messily tousled, giving him a boyish charm that had once made Katrina's heart flutter. But now, as she looked at him, a deep sense of guilt gnawed at her insides.

"Katrina! You're back!" Janis exclaimed, rushing forward to envelop her in a warm embrace. His arms wrapped around her with a tenderness that made her heart ache even more.

"Janis," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion as she hugged him back. "I missed you so much."
