When I woke up, I heard a peal of thunder that shook the house and the driving rain slapped hard against my bedroom window. I thought about how fitting this was, considering the task at hand in the city today.

Rain in history has been a blessing for crops, gardens and flower beds. It has also been a curse, with flooding, monsoons or depending on your beliefs, judgment as well.

This day will prove to be a blessing for someone and judgement for someone else.

My morning classes were a real mixed bag, two English classes and a Shop class, all grade 9. A challenging morning for a challenging day.

On Monday morning, I had an important call to make and then had a chat with my Principal about the stresses and challenges I've been up against, lately.

I asked for Wednesday afternoon off. I lied and said that I had booked an appointment to talk with a psychologist. He pressed me for details but I just said it was about my recent separation from Casey.

The rain had let up by the time I got home for lunch. I made myself a roast beef sandwich with lettuce, cheese and mustard and sat on my front porch swing, enjoying the fresh smell the rain left behind. My favorite smells were fresh cut grass and rain. Oh, and Rosalee's perfume.

A group of students walked by as I finished the first half of my sandwich. I wasn't paying attention to who they were. Then, one of them veered off from the crowd and came toward me. It was Rosalee. I didn't recognize her at first. She could certainly wear a pair of blue jeans.

She smiled brightly and whispered hello and sat down on the swing beside me. She eyed up my sandwich and told me it looked good. I offered it to her and she took it from the plate and had a big bite.

She grinned and half heartedly offered me some of my own sandwich. I laughed out loud. She was obviously very hungry.

She finished her/my sandwich and asked me why I was home for lunch and not at school. I told her that I had things to do in the city today and I wouldn't be back until late.

She looked to the street on both sides to see if anyone was around, then slid her slender hand over and hooked her baby finger into mine. She asked if I wanted her to come with me, but I assured her that it was all business and would be pretty boring for her.

We could hear the afternoon bell at the school, and I urged her to go and promised that I would text her later. She pushed out her bottom lip and pouted. A bird could have landed on it.

I could tell that she wanted to kiss me. I walked her over to the back door, pretending to show her some plants. She kissed me then went on her way.

She looked so fine in those jeans. I would have taken her with me but there was serious dealings to be done. Not only that, but there was a risk of getting fired or shot by her dad. Both were possibilities if we were caught.
