Having gone into the Army right out of high school, I was always the youngest person in the crowd. Once settled onto a military base in Japan, I began to become friends with co-workers, most of them married with spouses and family living in off-base housing.

We partied every weekend. Afternoons were often spent playing volleyball and drinking beer; nights were for music, dim lights, and foggy hazes of pungent smoke.

One couple I came to know, Roberto (Robbie) and Juanita (Nita), taught me much about the barrio they came from in southern California. They had a small daughter, Jessie, just two years old, who had become my buddy. Robbie and Nita fed me dinner often. I was just to show up with some beer and I got to eat beans and rice. Their couch was my bed for more than one night I can remember.

Word got around our circle of friends quickly that Robbie and Nita were having the New Year’s Eve party my first year amongst them. Their house was small, so Robbie and I moved all the living room furniture into a bedroom to make more room for dancing.
