THE RECONCILIATION

We ran into Eric by accident. It was in late April and we were at a bar, where we had stopped for an after dinner drink. Neither of us had been there before.

Todd had been back for six weeks after being out of the country for over six months. His company had sent him to Asia and the Middle East, originally for three weeks, but there had been complications and, one week or two at a time, his assignment had stretched that much. No spouses were allowed to visit, the places he had to go were not safe.

Now, he was back for good, with a promotion and a salary increase. It was time to repair the damage done to our eighteen month marriage by his extended absence. During the time we had been forced to be apart Todd and I had been unfaithful to each other, he with the women provided and paid for by his foreign business counterparts, as is the custom in those countries, myself with Eric. I first told Todd about it while it was going on, on the phone and during his one brief visit to headquarters.

After his return, at first it looked like we were going to split. Then we began to talk. We went to counseling, and after some very difficult days we agreed to forgive each other. I told him that only loneliness had driven me to seek another man, and that I had never intended to ...
