At my first Army post assignment after I was out of Advanced Training School, I was at a fort in the middle of nowhere. While we were in the continental U.S. you really could hardly tell it since we were surrounded by endless acres of vast wasteland. Translation: there wasn't much to do. So during the week, the "fun" amounted to a game of ball after chow, or shooting hoops, or trecking a quarter mile to the local on-post bar and getting drunk.

You couldn't really get off post and get to a nearby town in time to get back in the evening. So off-post activities were limited to weekends. If you didn't have weekend duty, that is. So needless to say, those who didn't have weekend duty immediately teamed with anyone who had transportation and tried to get away for the weekend... back to some semblance of civilization.

Since we were in such a Godforsaken area, you couldn't just get a one-way ride... but had to pretty much team up for the entire weekend and go wherever your ride was going. So those of us who had cars were in high demand, and were very popular. Within a few minutes after the duty roster was posted, I would have a full carload of guys who wanted to go somewhere with me for the weekend. The first couple of weeks there, the post (which was small) was just being staffed, so there were new guys arriving daily.
