In the Guard

Mary and I had been married for about 12 years. It was a good marriage with two children, one from her first marriage and one together. They had gotten old enough that they only needed supervision as they could mainly take care of themselves. Mary had started expressing boredom and a desire to add some variety to her life. I had been a medical officer in the local Army National Guard since medical school. I had traveled extensively and had been activated for the Persian Gulf War. I was decorated for my service and had risen to the rank of Lt. Colonel. Advancement in the medical corps was usually rapid as it is a small service which requires a high degree of training. There are not a lot of people who can fill the slots. Mary had frequently expressed jealousy of my adventures and said that she wanted to join the Guard, also. She was still young enough to enlist, although it would be as a regular soldier. How could I not give my permission? The girls thought it was cool. It was decided that they could either stay with friends or their grandparents when we had duty.

Mary enlisted and was gone for several weeks in basic training and the required active duty. She looked wonderful when she returned. Basic had trimmed off the extra pounds she had been trying to lose since the birth of our daughter. In addition, she was more confident in herself. She was assigned to the local mechanized unit.
