I had been working construction for 2 days now. My first had gotten me all the necessary snide comments like, "hey new dude, how bout getting us some polka dot paint" or "buzz cut, wanna smell my crotch?" I just tried to give it back to them with things like "no man, I'm not into smelling monkey crack". It was working and so was I, after having been laid off for the last 3 months, I was just glad to be out in the open air and making some moola.

I am 22 years old and just graduated MIT with a degree in construction supervision. That meant that not only was I the new guy. I was one of the youngest guys on the crew but I was still supposed to be the boss. That was really sorta one big joke. Most of the guys on my crew had been on this particular job since groundbreaking. That had been over nine months ago. They all had a better handle on the project than I did. I would pour over the plans for the slightest little detail. Most of them had long ago abandoned the plans as they had them already figured out in their minds. Now I don't mean to say they had them memorized or didn't refer to them, but what would take me a couple of hours to find seemed to only take them maybe 15 seconds. Needless to say I felt awkward and that only lead to further ragging from all of them.

It was after lunch, around two I think when this guy comes up to the plan table where I was searching for the correct downsizing scale for some duct work. I hadn't seen him before. ...
