Our mom passed away my senior in high school. I was the second of four brothers in the family, and we were fortunate to have three of her sisters take turns helping out with the house work and cooking over the next three months. But they had their own families to tend to, so my dad put an ad in the paper for a live-in-maid, for the long term.

An older woman by the name of Lula answered the ad. Her husband had died six months before, and it turned out she had been looking for just this type of position. She had moved into the city from out of town and lived in an apartment. For the next week Lula would come to the house in the morning, fix our breakfast, see us off to school or work, then do the laundry and other household chores during the day. In the evening she would fix dinner, wash the dishes, then return home to her apartment. All of us kids liked her right away, so my dad hired her and helped her move her meager belongings into the guest bedroom. Lula became like a grandmother to us. As a matter of fact, we all started calling her grandma Lula, which she seemed to like quite a bit. She also provided a motherly presence around the house, which helped to get all us boys back on track.
