Was it really a dream?

I pulled into the drive just after 8.00pm, grateful that the day had ended and I was now home. After the day I had just experienced, all I wanted was a cold beer, a quick sandwich, a very hot shower and then collapse in front of the TV until my lights went out.

The house was in absolute darkness, which was strange. I always left a light on in the hallway for the dog. What was even stranger was that the dog would usually start barking his greeting as soon as he heard the car pull onto the drive. Tonight there was nothing but absolute silence.

I began to get a little nervous – I walked up to the front door and put my key in the lock. The door opened easily and I noticed that the catch was up. Someone was definitely in the house, or had been. Still no sign of the dog.

I reached for the light switch and was startled by a soft voice coming from somewhere down at the other end of the hallway.

"Don't switch the light on! Leave it off. Walk slowly towards me. There is nothing to worry about. One of your neighbours is looking after the dog. Just relax. I've got a very special present for you"
