The Convention

In my line of work, there are several medium-sized conventions around the country every year. I went to one a few years ago, when I was married, and had a crazy experience that I want to tell you about.

At these conventions, I'm often called upon to give seminars. That's what these conventions are: a series of one-hour presentations from people in the field. It helps business & it's a great way to network. Anyway, it's cheaper if you ‘double-up'. They pair you randomly with someone else from the convention in a room for the weekend. I got there Friday night, even though the action wouldn't get started till late Saturday morning, which is when most people show up.

When I checked in, my roommate for the weekend was also there a night early. We exchanged pleasantries and basic information while I unpacked. His name was Jim. He was a tall, slender black man from Chicago. He, too was married, no kids. As it turned out, there was a gathering of the early birds for drinks at 8:00. Jim and I had dinner together at the hotel's restaurant, and got into deep conversation. ...
