I. Jack Spartling had a lot to be thankful for. He was almost the head of a large Chicago conglomerate, he had a beautiful wife, a nice car, all the money he would ever need... And yet, something had eluded Jack all these years. As often as he and his wife Edith had tried to have a child, they had not been successful in starting a family. Jack could tell she was getting weary of this state of affairs. Not even all the gifts or trips in the world could make up for her yearning to care for a child. Neither really considered adoption, as they really wanted this child to be "theirs."

They had been married for fifteen years then. In the 50's, Jack went to work for the McLaren Company, which had taken a large part in the war effort, while going to Northwestern University studying business. There he met Edith McBride, a charming young student from Independence, Missouri. They were from two different worlds: he the handsome city man, she the innocent blonde beauty from the country. Yet, the two started dating, and he introduced Edith to a world she never thought existed. Growing up, Edith had been raised by her mother to be a "proper, reserved gentlewoman." Hence, she resisted Jack's advances for some time during their courtship. But as college opened her mind, she finally gave him a chance to know her more intimately. From that point on, their relationship grew as Edith relished in the joys of sex.
