As bad as I needed a new assistant manager, I still wasn't sure hiring Nina was a good idea. On the contrary, I was almost sure it was an awful idea, bound to end in disaster. But I couldn't tell my Uncle Mark that.

Nina had been his live in girlfriend for a little over a decade. While they may not have been married, in the practical sense she was his wife. After Uncle Mark's bitter divorce many years ago it looked as though he might spend the rest of his years as a bachelor, but then he met Nina and she had been apart of the family ever since. Truth be told, as a group we were probably more fond of Nine than we were of Uncle Mark. Not that Mark was a bad guy or anything, he was just a bit on quiet side, aloof some might even say. And while Nina hadn't cured him of that, her warm, outgoing nature brought him out of his shell a little and provided a nice balance. Everyone adored her.

As it happens, Nina ended up being laid off from her job as an office manager. This was right around the time when I reached the tipping point in my search for a new manager to help me handle my business.

I owned a pair of small apartment complexes and split my day between the two of them. When things were going well and I had good people managing the properties, life was good. But one of my managers had recently moved across country on rather short notice and left me short handed. I spent the first couple of weeks of her absence trying to manage things ...
