Heather in the Wild, pt. 3.1

Heather watched Maria, who was sitting in her kayak about fifty feet off shore, dig her paddle into the water for one stroke and then the other paddle, mounted at ninety degrees to the first on the other end of the bar, for another. Those two powerful strokes surprised Heather and she stepped down to the water more quickly than she thought she would have to. She prepared herself to catch the bow so that it wouldn't be damaged by hitting the beach. Before it got to her though, Maria used the paddle as a brake by plunging it into the water perpendicular to her direction of travel on her right. This had the effect of presenting her left side to the beach and slowing her dramatically. She had plenty of time to bring the paddle over to the beach side and use it to fend off and stop just as the small boat touched bottom.

"Nice," Heather said, holding out her hand. She expected Maria to take it to make it easier to get out of the kayak, but instead Maria untied the beer leash from the boat and handed it to Heather. Heather reeled in the beer and was impressed to see that each bottle was held by its own knot with a longer piece on the first bottle looped around and tied to the main body of the leash, keeping them in a small group.

Maria extracted herself from the boat by hiking up onto the back hull briefly. At that point she was able to get her feet under her and she stood, stepping out of the boat onto the beach. She bent at the waist ...
