Sins of the Past

Sam and Mary Arnold grew up in the same town, lived five houses away from each other. Their parents were close friends. Sam had been in love with Mary ever since he could remember. Mary was dating a guy by the name of Mike Reynolds all through middle and high school. Sam never saw anything spectacular about Mike. He was older than her by several years, due to failing an elementary school grade twice. Sam always stayed close to Mary and comforted her when her and Mike fought. It was getting close to the end of their senior year when Mary and Mike broke up. Sam never asked why and Mary never offered up any information. Sam worked hard to get into Mary's heart and with graduation drawing close, he finally succeeded. Mary agreed to be his girlfriend. The rest of the school year was like a dream to Sam. He had the girl and Mike disappeared from his thoughts. Sam proposed to Mary six months after graduation and Mary cried as she said "Yes". The families were ecstatic. Everyone thought the sweethearts would be the perfect couple. Time has a way of cracking the strongest foundation.
