I put the phone down. I could relax, the call confirmed with my wife that she had arrived at work and was now at least 30 minutes away. There was little chance this time she would be back having forgotten something. I picked up the phone again and dialled Suzie in the house opposite. I confirmed we were safe and that we could continue with the arrangements we had made the previous week. I said I had to make a few work calls first which would give her time to drive her car to the shopping parade and walk back. We had agreed it would be safer if it looked as if she had left for work as normal. As I used my spare bedroom as an office, my car was frequently parked on the drive and would not arouse the same suspicion parked during the day as hers would parked opposite. In addition, I was now keen that our mutual neighbour Lucy did not understand more about the extent of my relationship with Suzie than she had already detected and Suzie's car might arouse her suspicion.

I picked up my coffee mug, leaned back in desk chair and looked out of the window waiting to see Suzie leave. I hoped I would see Lucy as I had not seen her leaving at the usual time since we had spent the afternoon together last week.
